Contactless Innovation & Account-Based Transition
For more than two decades, Nottingham City Transport (NCT) and INIT have worked in partnership to deliver one of the UK’s most progressive urban ticketing environments. What began in 2004 with the introduction of smartcard technology has evolved into a fully integrated, multi-modal contactless system — and is now entering its next phase with Account-Based Ticketing (ABT).
Serving a fleet of approximately 270 buses across more than 70 routes, alongside integration with Nottingham Express Transit (NET) trams and Linkbus services, NCT required a fare system capable of simplifying payment while supporting seamless multi-operator travel. Passenger expectations were shifting rapidly toward cashless, digital and contactless payments. The challenge was to modernise without disrupting a high-performing network.
The foundation was the Easyrider smartcard scheme, enabling prepaid travel products and stored value functionality. INIT’s back-office systems provided secure fare management and revenue control, establishing a scalable base for future development. Mobile ticketing followed, allowing passengers to purchase and activate tickets through the NCTX Buses app. This reduced boarding times and enhanced flexibility. In 2020, NCT introduced contactless “Tap & Go” payments across its bus network. Customers could pay using bank cards or mobile devices, with daily fare capping automatically calculated at the end of the day.
Highlights:
- 20+ year partnership (2004–2031)
- First multi-operator contactless scheme outside London
- TapNGo since 2020
- City-wide daily fare capping
- ABT rollout from 2025
In 2022, Nottingham became the first UK city outside London to implement a fully operational multi-operator, multi-modal contactless scheme. Passengers could tap once across buses, trams and Linkbus services and receive a daily capped fare, regardless of operator or mode. INIT’s MOBILEvario system aggregates journeys and calculates the optimal fare across the network.
Under a renewed agreement extending through 2031, NCT is now transitioning to Account-Based Ticketing. The move from card-centric processing to centralised customer accounts will allow digital product management, family travel administration and automated top-ups — further enhancing convenience and accessibility.
Today, Nottingham stands as a benchmark for integrated city ticketing in the UK. The long-term collaboration demonstrates how phased innovation, operational continuity and customer focus can transform fare systems into flexible, future-ready platforms.
